Dear befuddled, confused, bewildered, bothered, dazed, disoriented, dumbfounded, muddled, flustered, stupefied, and simply defensive angry people who don’t know a socialist from a communist: Wisconsin Republicans and Scott Walker Supporters (not to be confused with athletic supporters).
I love you! I really, really do. You are so easy to love because you make me feel superior in every way imaginable—and if you have read my Love Letters, you know how I love feeling superior. I really, really do. It’s a rather human trait that I share with you!
Hope I didn’t hurt your feelings!
I have a point to make just for you. I. Am. Speaking. Slowly. And, I am going to make my point in parables. Just like Jesus did. You have read the Bible haven’t you? No? Didn’t think so. All that going into a closet to pray and feeding the hungry and turning the other cheek and yada, yada, yada…
Parable 1: A big and powerful man takes another man’s game away and the smaller man gets his brother and attacks the bigger man—or they will starve.
Parable 2: A cave woman is feeding her children. A strange cave woman rampages by and takes the food away from the children. The mother hits the strange woman with a club and takes the food back.
Parable 3: A modern day man’s grocery budget for the month is $300.00 for his family. Scott Walker cuts his pay by $300.00 and the angry man goes to the Capitol in Madison with a rude sign and marches peacefully but angrily around the Capitol.
Even though he has a job, is dressed nicely, behaves quite politely (unless shouting charming political slogans), wears deodorant and cologne, and has a buzz cut and a manicure (I saw that manicure :>), SWS constantly refer to him as a smelly “hippie.”
Parable 4: (I hope you are getting the message, but, JIC…) Scott Walker took food off the tables of thousands of state employees and now it’s a BFD.
Republicans and SWS (Scott Walker Supporters)—who are not one and the same, BTW—why are you so surprised by the response to Walker and his war on workers?
It is a law of nature: take food out of the mouths of human beings and their children and you will be met with rage.
Let’s take that a little further. Taking food out of the mouths of Wisconsin employees created a sense of insecurity in the state and lots of people reacted with rage—because they realized that:
“If we know, then we must fight for your life as though it were our own. For if they take you in the morning, they will be coming for us that night.” (James Baldwin)
Food was taken off the table and jobs are not being created. Compensation packages are not getting better. We don’t have secure health care. Social Security and Medicare are not secure. Voting rights have been attacked—our very means of righting these wrongs. Unions have been attacked—our means of raising the standard of living for everyone.
So, the message is this:
Jobs and income=survival. Jobs=security.
And, human beings will fight for survival and security.
Do not be befuddled at the responses that have erupted since January. They are completely totally remarkably logical.
Happy Labor Day!
You ain’t seen nothing yet.
Your friend,
Vivian
