Keeping Hope Alive in Wisconsin

The Republican Dream

 Loren Adams, 3 August 2011
In the 30s Republicans dreamed of destroying Franklin Delano Roosevelt while dismantling all social, banking and labor programs that were helping the country recover from Republican-born Depression.
Eighty-years later, Republicans dream of destroying Barack Obama while dismantling all social, banking and labor programs implemented by Democrats over 80 years that prevented the country from again falling into Republican-born depressions like the 30s.
Republicans have always despised “safety-nets” because they believe only free-loaders and parasites partake. The unemployed stay in that condition only when granted support, they claim, and their favorite slur for a food-stamp recipient is “welfare queen.”
Everyone should know by now – Republicanism is an illness, not a cure.
Enough rant; it has long been determined the root cause of this century’s pending Great Depression – the final product of Republican politic. But what’s it like living the Republican dream (as opposed to the American)? It is now time to understand how to survive; past time to analyze why – as if no one knows except media bent on establishing false equivalency.
Let’s take ourselves into the near future to maybe get assimilated.
Republican America is one of declining wealth, dwindling resources, poor to no services, and dead or nearly dead industries resembling salvage yards. High interest rates are charged to the few approved. It’s a nation of freeways deteriorating to gravel pocketed by privatized toll booths, of collapsed bridges, and flights reserved only for the very rich. It’s a country of urban blight, one-third homeless, rusting factories, and boulevards boasting tattoo parlors, casinos, and check-cashing scams. Businesses are boarded on Main Street, skyscrapers crumble, while millions of homeless live on streets lined with empty houses.
Survivors in Republican America are forced to compete for vanishing commodities, resulting in riots, looting, theft, and murder. It’s simply the natural progression anyone could have predicted. With only scarce supplies and no mechanism to enforce rations, what other aftermath could result? Rightwing America is a very unsafe, unstable, and violent place where even the upstanding must compromise principle to survive and put food on the table. It deteriorates to the classic primitive contest – survival of the fittest where only the most brutal bring home the bacon.
Republican America flaunts unpaid, non-credentialed teachers, run-down schools, vacant colleges, and volunteer firemen and police. There are no unions; they’ve been decertified and busted. There are no student loans. Only a fraction seek higher education – and then only from wealthy families.
Textbooks are written and published by Christian right organizations. Subjects discarded are evolution, labor history, climate change, and sex education. Inserted are Judeo-Christian heritage and how devoted the founders were to Christ and church. Ronald Reagan is deified more than the framers, and “American exceptionalism” is the daily lecture.
Republican America, like Walker’s Wisconsin, restricts voting to citizens with government-issued photo IDs and “active” bank accounts, but makes certain these are almost impossible to obtain, especially in Africa-American and Latino districts.
Only white, evangelical precincts are favored. (One can catch a glimpse of future voting by observing Republican legislation in states captured by the Tea Party in ’10.)
In Republican America, fundamentalist Christian “morals” are legislated while crime skyrockets to historic levels. The more rightwing laws, the more crime. Gun violence runs rampant; still gun owners are protected. In fact, every citizen is encouraged to carry a weapon, and the right to carry concealed firearms is ensured federally across state lines.
Gay marriage is banned; all former marriages and state laws legalizing same-sex contracts are annulled. Indeed, gay sex is criminalized [like it was in the good ol’ days]. Thus, gays are again routinely victims of violence and unpunished murder. (The ultimate transgression is “justifiable” in the name of Jesus to eradicate evildoers, they assert.)
Abortion is banned. Roe v. Wade is overturned. (Meanwhile, wealthy Republicans send daughters, wives and lovers to Europe, Asia and South America for the “procedure.”)
Republican America is a police state. Except the “police” are no longer local, but poorly-paid federal troops. Major violence erupts first in urban centers, then spreads across the country. The Republican government feels compelled to suppress the outbreaks, then eventually suspends all civil liberties and elections.
Republican America, in the literal, is Third World.
Republican America paves the road to revolution, for which true libertarian Tea Partiers achingly lust so they can try out their precious weapons on “undesirables.”
The religious right will never believe Republicans brought America to its knees. Neither will characters like Karl Rove, Grover Norquist, Glenn Beck, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, and Frank Luntz. But, of course, they are all major contributors to the fall.
Question is – How are we going to genuinely survive? Really?

Dear Serfs

I love you. I really, really do! But then, lots of people love you--in a really demeaning sickening kind of way.

By "lots of people," I mean that 0.01% of the population loves you--the very, very rich and powerful such as the Koch brothers, hedge fund managers, a couple of Supreme Court justices, and the kinds of people that drink $350.00 bottles of wine and go to meetings at Rancho Mirage. Oops, I can see I am going to have trouble finding the humor in this!

Oh, did I say "Dear Serfs?" I meant to say Dear Minions, Peasants, and Servile Dependent Underling Subordinant Sycophants--the kinds of Serfs that support feudalism and promote it.

I just love how you can live in modest houses in modest neighborhoods earning modest livings with virturally no savings, no investments, no power, no net worth outside your homes and still find it in your hearts to support your Lords and Masters in the Republican Party, on Wall Street, in the Supreme Court, and in the media.

In other words, "Dear Republican Right-Wing-Nuts! Hope I didn't hurt your feelings.

How do you do you keep your delusions!?! How do you manage to continue to support and, frankly adore, your Lords and Masters? It is amazing!

I am frankly envious of the 0.01%. Good grief--if my math is correct, someone at this level of wealth has as much annual income (from investments, of course) as 1,000 families in the bottom 90%. I want a few houses, and a few cars, and a few boats and a few...a few more really big things! Why aren't you just green with envy of the Koch brothers?

But, no. No. You Serfs are modest people--or possibly you are really, really confused. You are envious of...I cannot believe it myself...you are envious of school teachers? And snow plow drivers? And, sanitation workers? You think they make too much money? Yes, you think school teachers make too much money. I wish my mother were alive! She was a school teacher. She would die laughing.

Before the current crisis in Wisconsin, folks in Janesville were just sick with envy of General Motors line employees. Yes, you heard that right. They could have been envious of Donald Trump or the CEO of General Motors--or the Board of Directors. But, no, they were envious of people who did physical labor in an un-airconditioned plant with all the over-time they could get.

I have never heard you Serfs, er--I mean, you conservative Republicans--express outrage over the fact that CEO's make an average of 185 times more than the average worker and that average worker would be YOU. Why, you seem to support your Masters with your entire hearts and souls! You don't want them to pay anymore taxes! You don't want their banks and businesses to be constrained by common sense, or law, or morality, or regulation or ...

Oh, perhaps you don't know you're a Serf? Perhaps you think you are going to make it rich?

Hasn't anyone told you the deck is loaded? Haven't you heard--you are not going to become CEO's? You are not going to be the new "rags to riches" story? Hope I didn't hurt your feelings!

Rather than support unions and good wages and benefits, you RWN (Right-Wing-Nuts) want to decrease wages, benefits, and union rights for everyone--including yourselves? I've never understood that part of it. If you are a Republican with a union job working for the government, do you want to cut your own salary and benefits and give up your own union rights? Just askin'

Then, while simultaneously supporting the ultra-rich and powerful--with whom you have nothing in common (in fact, most Serfs have never met their Masters), being envious of school teachers who make squat/year, you RWN Serfs also manage to maintain the delusion that you are the wealthy privileged people that are supporting a vast hoard of poor welfare slobs and other social leeches. Say what?

Serfs, you are supporting the rich and powerful, school teachers and government workers are not the rich and powerful, and you are not the rich and powerful.

The richest 10% of Americans own 2/3 of American's net worth. The average income for the top 1% has risen 120% since 1979 while the income for the bottom 60% has flat-lined.

But, by golly, you support them with everything you have! No more taxes on anything or anyone for anything! No more regulation! Sell those state assets to private corporations! Lower wages! Bust unions. Get rid of benefits --who needs 'em! Increase the work day and work week! Bring back child labor! Those Lords and Masters need more money to...to... I don't know what because I've never met one! Because, God knows, they aren't creating more jobs!

The average income for the top 0.01% is over $30 million and you are worried sick about them having to pay a little bit more in taxes. Serfs, you are not disgusted by their greed. You are not disgusted by off-shore tax havens. You are not disgusted by tax loopholes for the ultra-rich. You are not disgusted by pay-to-play politics. You just love the freedom that the Supreme Court recently gave corporations to buy elections.

But, then, you share with me your disgust for people who are barely surviving on disability. And, you tell me that you don't really want people to die from lack of health care, but you shouldn't have to pay for it, either.

Serfs, I am confused. I really, really am. And, disgusted.

Your friend,

Vivian

Peter Barca‎"This is a flip-flop," Lena Taylor said. "First you were for it, then you were against it. Now you're for it again?" Wisconsin Needs 3 Courageous Senators. Now!

Why are the 6 Republican State Senators up for recall election on August 9, 2011?  Did they not do a good enough job to deserve re-election which they won?  Did they not look to help their constituents when asked?     Do they not love their district?

Irrelevant.

Remember this sign up at the Capitol in February and March?
Alberta Darling, Randy Hopper, Dan Kapanke, Sheila Harsdorf, Rob Cowles and Luther Olsen are being recalled because they failed to stop Governor Walker when they had the chance.  In fact, they did worse than that.  What these Senators did was to vote for Governor Walker's  legislative agenda which aims to change Wisconsin from a progressive laboratory of Democracy into a guinea pig for out of state interests.

In the middle of February, when the Budget Repair Bill looking to take away collective bargaining right was first presented, it was clear to everyone including Scott Walker, that with the Assembly being in Republican hands and the Senate having only 14 Democratic Senators,  there was little that could be done to stop Governor's agenda from becoming the law of the land.  As the people flooded the Capitol in protest, the sign saying Wisconsin needs 3 Cou(R)ageous Senators went up right away because it made it very clear: all of this can be stopped by 3 people on the other side who stepped up and put breaks on this run away train.

Only 3 people who felt that Budget Repair Bill and what followed -  State Budget, Voter ID bill, redistricting - were too extreme, could make a huge difference. But they were not there.  Who knows what Republican Senators were promised and how they were threatened.  But the fact is that these Senators can no longer remain in the position of power they were placed in by voters.

Did Alberta Darling, Rob Cowles, Luther Olsen, Randy Hopper, Dan Kapanke and Sheila Harsdorf step up and protect their constituents and the rest of the state?  No.  That much is clear.

Now some say that what these Republicans Senators did does not rise to the level of warranting a recall.  Really? Does voting to take Wisconsin 100 years back in time does not warrant a conversation at the voting booth?  We say it does.

Now it is up to us to decide what we are going to do about it.  Are we going to think back fondly to the protests in Madison in the middle of winter as merely some kind of a community festival that has no meaning today or are we going to reach out to our friends and neighbors and tell them that voting for Randy Hopper and the rest is the same as voting for Scott Walker?

And here is one more image to remind you about the simple math involved in these recall elections:

It's quite simple, really:

It takes 17 Democratic Senators (since obviously Republicans are unable to step up their game to protect their constituents and the state) to put breaks on Walker agenda.  If these can be found, not only will we have protected our State but we will show the rest of the nation that voting counts, voting matters and that these extremists can be stopped peacefully and democratically.  If we fail, Scott Walker and his ilk will continue to take Wisconsin apart and reassemble it in the image provided to them by Koch Brothers.

The same as with Joe McCarthy, the time will come when all of us will look back and laugh at the time Scott Walker tried to run our state into the ground, but until someone steps up and says "enough", that time will never come.  Rob Cowles and the rest of the Republican Senators failed to stand up to the Governor.  That is why we need to say "enough!" and recall those that can not stand up to the Governor, so that those who will fight for Wisconsin can be put in the Senate on August 9.

And the winner is... I will get more "Likes" than Scott Walker

I will get more"Likes"than Scott WalkerCongratulations to I will get more "likes" than Scott Walker and its many devoted fans for winning the Defend Wisconsin News Round Up Protest Page of July by popular vote.  Leader almost from the start, fans of More "Likes" heeded Stephanie's call to action and voted to show their strong feelings of support for this great page.

Fans of Shit Scott Walker Is Doing To My State stepped up as well and made their strong feelings known by placing Doing To My State in second place with roughly half as many votes and third of membership compared to the winning page.

3rd place finisher - 540,000 To See Scott Walker out of WI, January 2012 - had more than 10 times the fans of the winning page but chose to not promote this contest on its page.  The results reflected that.

Monologues of Dissent with the smallest fan base of all the participants, clawed and pleaded its way out of the fifth and final place where a great page Support Bill Cronon found itself.  That was probably due to Bill Cronon's supporters being too busy uncovering ALEC model legislation to vote.

Congratulations to the winner - I will get more "likes" than Scott Walker, all the participants and their fans.  Please consider this a small warm up for August 9 and keep up great work!
