Why Defend Wisconsin News Round Up?

1. Because someone had to.

Putting together links to news stories about what has been taking place in Wisconsin since mid-February 2011 was something that had to be done.  My favorite news website is www.politicalwire.com which brings together best political stories nationwide.  Having been an avid, regular reader of Political Wire, when Wisconsin Protests began, I knew that a website bringing together relevant news about the situation in Wisconsin had to exist yet it was missing.  I am glad that DWNRU can plug that "hole".

2. History

Facebook provides an unbelievable, never seen before opportunity to share information.  But once the story is "shared" on Facebook it goes away.  Additionally, considering the furious pace with which new stories were coming out in February and March, I knew that sharing each of these stories would be an overload, an overkill of sorts for my Facebook friends.  Therefore it seemed that putting together all of these headlines together in one place and releasing them in chunks made the most sense.

Additionally, the Archivist in me feels that it is important to preserve these news stories as resource for future readers, researchers and historians, who will look at what is happening in these, by no measure ordinary times, and will see how the events unfolded, how they were covered, who said what and in what order.

3. Communication

To my great satisfaction, DWNRU is being read nationwide, which means there are people in Virginia, California and everywhere in-between, who are paying attention to what is going on in Wisconsin.  That part of the puzzle is vital.  After all, if you did something and nobody knew about it, the impact of your action will not be as significant.  DWNRU brings together news about Wisconsin Protests that is relevant, timely and regular.

4. To bring together local voices

Rock County and more specifically, Janesville area where this blog originates, has its share of talented, passionate people who are excellent writers.  Bringing local voices together and giving them a bigger stage has been a wonderful opportunity for me to share opinions of real people with the rest of the state and the world.  Whether it is Vivian Creekmore's Love Letters or John Jenks' musings about the relationship between Scott Walker, Paul Ryan and Ayn Rand, these are thoughts worth reading and I'm glad to be able to help share these with a wider audience.

Thank you for continuing to count on Defend Wisconsin News Round Up to provide you with the regular round up of news relevant to Wisconsin Protests and thank you for helping us spread the word about this site.  For our part we will continue to work hard to make sure Wisconsin remains as Bob LaFollette called it: "Laboratory of Democracy"!

My Recent Follow Up Letter to Rep. Knilans

Hello Representative Knilans,

I’ve reviewed this budget and disagree with you entirely with your obvious disregard of people not just in your District but the entire State. This pittance of a gesture towards Janesville Issues and Senior Care informs me that what you claimed to run on is and was a total basket of lies. With regard to your work habits; I do not doubt that you put plenty of hours in but not for anyone except your radical few Constituents that somehow managed to get you elected and a hope that somehow the Koch Industries will take pity on you like the did with Dan Conry. Ooops! he is no longer at WCLO and it appears they did not help him either.

I told you some time back the Dan Conry would not be around for too long. It’s been said that politicians can fool some of the people some of the time but not all the people all of the time. With Governor Walker’s polls quickly dropping into the manure that surrounds him and many of this new Republican Party; your stay in the Assembly will be short lived. You grew up in Janesville and as I understand it worked as a line worker and later in Supervision. You went to our schools Our Janesville culture is and always has been a sense of LIMITED GOVERNMENT large enough to take care of the needs of the people and caring about others less fortunate.

You, Walker, The Fitzgeralds, Prosser, and Amy Loudenbeck are ushering in BIG GOVERNMENT as you strip away local government rights. Did you not take political science or study any history at all? You and your Republican Counterparts have laid to rest any thought of Small or Limited Government that pragmatically expands or contracts as needed. Not only have you strangled Local Governments; you are now embarking upon the creation of an Authoritarian State…Your choice to join the DARK SIDE is understood. The easy vote for your Constituents was not made. You are part of a movement that has been likened to another’s rise in power during the 1930’s and 1940’s in Germany. Those rascals first came for teachers, unions, and others they demonized as the cause of their woes. The idea that you would sink this low and not see what you have done is amazing. I prefer to live in a clean environment with great teachers for my grand kids and a police force that should not have to fear reprisals with concealed carry. I have seen ALEC’s strategies and it sickens me. I do not want a State that resembles Somalia and that is what you are helping to create.

With regard to future votes you need to do just the opposite of what your Republican Party says to do. I am sure you will be RECALLED so I hope you have another plan for your future employment. Your days as an Assemblyman is getting closer to the RECALL PETITION and the RECALL VOTE.

It is truly sad because I thought you would have been true to your campaign promise that you would fight for jobs, the I-39 corridor, and other meaningful solutions for the unemployed, small business, and the less fortunate in Janesville. You have not and your continued disaffection for your community is appalling!

Respectfully, an Independent Wisconsin Voter,

John Jenks

Subject: RE: Thank You for Reading my Email

Hello John,

Thank you for your e-mail. As you may be aware I did in fact vote in favor of the 2011-2012 Biannual budget.

I believe this Budget is something the state can be proud of. It is good for the state and the City of Janesville. We are no longer kicking the can down the road for our children to pick up. For the first time in over a decade, Wisconsin has taken the first step forward in becoming fiscally responsible for its spending habits. We have found a solution to our inherited 3 Billion dollar deficit that does not fall on the backs of the taxpayers. I have worked hard in the past couple of months to make certain that this budget was fair to not only the residents of my district, but the State of Wisconsin as a whole.

A lot of positive goals were achieved in this budget. Goals such as saving jobs, protecting SeniorCare, protecting our community recycling program and obtaining shared revenue relief for the City of Janesville are just a few examples of what we were able to accomplish. Under Governor Walker’s initial budget Janesville received a 23.1% shared revenue cut. However, after I put persistent pressure on members of the Joint Finance committee concerning the importance of extra relief for the city. Janesville will now only receive a 15% cut under the revised budget. This is a difference of an extra 399,515 dollars back to the City of Janesville. This figure is the largest relief given back to any municipality in the state.

I hope this has addressed you concerns. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you in the future.

Representative Joe Knilans
44th Assembly District

Tea Party = Closet Liberals?

Recently, at a gathering at my house celebrating all sorts of good things, I found myself manning the grill and standing between two friends: an avid Tea Party supporter and a liberal, proud of her involvement in  Madison protests of 1970s.  I was getting concerned that fireworks having nothing to do with the grill, were inevitable.  To my great surprise, my two friends not knowing each others' political backgrounds, quickly found common ground on, of all things, the ID bill (since signed into law).  Both couldn't stand the idea of government keeping such close track of their identity and creating guidelines and rules they needed to follow in order to exercise their constitutional right to vote. It made me think that perhaps the two ends of the political spectrum are closer than many want us may be prepared to believe.

One of the worst things Governor Walker in Wisconsin and the right wing political machine nationwide are attempting to do, is to create an impression that there is a great big divide between the left and the right.  This view, once accepted, allows extremist politicians to place themselves at the top of their respective totem polls in order to continue to define what the view looks like from up above, and to attempt to prove to others that they belong there with the radicals as well.  But is it really so?  Are there just two points of view in America, one being THE left and another one being THE right?

There is more than one issue that brings conservatives and liberals together.  A recent example of one such recent issue may be Arbitration.  In April, Supreme Court of the United States issued a decision affecting consumers' ability to argue with binding arbitration.  Hailed as "crushing blow to American consumers and employees" by attorney representing Public Citizen, this decision was also decried by conservative blog Varight as subjecting consumers to "unaccountable court system".

Another issue where liberals and Tea Party supporters may find common ground is military spending, seen by both sides as wasteful and excessive.  Corporate welfare, Federal Reserve, trade agreements, Whistleblower bill and energy independence are more of the issues where liberals and conservatives have been able to find common ground.  Perhaps the time has come to finally realize that these are not anomalies but an indication of the populist paradigm re-emerging in American politics.  A paradigm that wants Government to adhere to common set of rules while protecting freedoms and opportunity for individuals.

What all of these have in common, is the concern shared by both Tea Party and Liberal activists that our government is really controlled by military and corporate interests.  Creating the false divide of "right" and "left" and using labels such as "socialism", only furthers the supposed divide and muddies the issue.  Yes, obviously there are disagreements between the Tea Party supporters and progressives, but the differences that separate the two extremes, do not negate and may not even be as important as the things that bring us together.

Visually speaking, perhaps the political spectrum is not a single line with one end being the far left and the other end being the far right, or a circle with far left meeting the far right but more of a net or a fabric, consisting of threads which sometimes come together and other times drift apart.  Through our common connections, we are all a part of a greater singular whole and we find common language through our common concerns and desires.  And when tragedy strikes, it is not attack on one, but on all because a hole in one part of the fabric damages the entire material.

Could it be that the most determined Tea Party believers are closer to the radical liberals than both are willing to admit?

AYN RAND: Concerns of many Conservatives and Baptists Part 3

I am not a follower of the Baptist Faith. I have family members that find comfort in this faith and it's pronouncements. I have family members and extended family members that are Roman Catholic, Agnostics, and Presbyterians. Many of my family are Lutherans of the ELCA tradition. I say this because it does not matter if you are a member of a faith or a Christian. You may be Muslim, Jewish, Brahmin, a follower of the Dalai Lama, or not sure or an athiest who has a moral philosophy that may be rooted in these faiths.

I bring this up because Baptists are often seen as far right Republicans. Not everyone is...Even they are concerned about AYN RAND! And the comments I've heard regarding her interviews with Wallace and Donohue have been positive. Along with an opinion from Ethics Daily I offer Tom Snyders interviews with Ayn Rand.

Keep in mind that Ayn Rand's Objectivism is the behavior I have observed with our current Wisconsin State Republican Leadership. They keep saying they are creating jobs with all of their anti-First Amendment new laws. The latest update for jobs:

Saturday evening news round up - NEW FORMAT

Editorial: Legislators little more than mules for special interest groups | The Oshkosh Northwestern | thenorthwestern.com

Northwestern editorial: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the business lobby Wisconsin manufacturers and Commerce is airing radio ads in support of mining legislation that overlooks one critical piece of information: the mining legislation hasn't yet been introduced. Don't worry. WMC and the mining company, Gogebic Taconite, will supply the details and the Republican leadership will designate a legislator to mule the bill in the Assembly or Senate.

Morality Crisis: Republicans Have to Choose Ayn Rand or Jesus

PoliticusUSA Sarah Jones: It’s old school to talk of ethics these days — makes me long for characters like Atticus Finch as role models for our children. Stemming from the modern morality of reality TV narratives like survival-of-the-fittest and he-who-consumes-the-most-wins, Americans are considered weak if they don’t attack first and steal all of the food for themselves, stepping over the less privileged to get more than their share. It’s social Darwinism meets Any Rand religion and it’s not pretty.

That came a year after his business was sued by the Department of Natural Resources for air pollution.

“Recall delay really about redistricting” – Stan Milam" by We the People -- GazetteXtra

Stan Milam “It’s true that not much trumps a majority in the state Senate, but defining new legislative boundaries every 10 years based on the census tops everything. If your political party is in power, you can draw the lines ensuring a much greater chance of success at the polls for the next 10 years. If your party is in the minority, you will be shut out of the redistricting process and forced to get used to being in the minority for the next decade.
“Redistricting—or reapportionment, as it is often referred to—is the least sexy but most important priority for partisan political zealots. They pore over census figures, voter lists and existing boundary lines hours on end trying to ensure power in 10-year chunks.”
Mayor proposes new restrictions on gun carrying in Madison

Wisconsin State Journal: The bill would allow local governments to create their own laws regarding concealed carry in public buildings, but it remains unclear as to whether they can enact ordinances that supersede a state law regarding concealed carry on private property.
The bill has left room for local governments to enact their own policies on concealed carry in government buildings.

Democrats see no need for placeholders in recall primaries - JSOnline

"The main reason is so there's not voter confusion," party spokeswoman Gillian Morris said earlier this week, adding that "it also has to do with allocation of resources, and how both sides handle it." If just a couple of races were general elections, for example, Republicans could presumably have spent heavily and perhaps beat back the recall challenge in those districts while Democrats focused on their primaries.

Fighting Jon Erpenbach - Isthmus | The Daily Page

After about a decade in radio, he was looking for something a little more stable. Ironically, even politics seemed more stable than radio; he started work at the legislative caucus in communications, then later as an aide for Joe Wineke, then representing the 27th Senate District.
A recurring theme on signs held by anti-Walker demonstrators is to note the governor's lack of a college degree. Since that's also true of Erpenbach, does that ever rankle? No, Erpenbach says. "It's no secret that I don't have a degree."
But Erpenbach is perhaps kinder than some toward this aspect of Walker's résumé: "There are certain experiences you get along the way that do help you do your job that you'd never get in college."

Wrath of Walker's Privatized Government

A Southeast Wisconsin County Sheriff’s office appears to be preparing for the moment the stripping of collective bargaining becomes law whether it is illegal or not. A reliable source has informed Politiscoop they are wasting no time imposing the wrath of Walker on the county employees. In the works for the department is the elimination of a work day every two weeks as they play around with the schedules. Additionally, there will only be a guarantee of two 15 minute breaks per shift, since federal law mandates that minimum. A lunch break of 20 minutes is “as assigned and at the discretion of the Sheriff”. Holidays will be no more and all that will be left is a skeleton amounting to the federal minimum standards the law requires.
