It was brought to our attention that the Fist symbol used in several symbols connected with Wisconsin Protests including the iconic image created by Lou Kaye of www.RockNetroots.blogspot.com back in February, was used in Socialist propaganda and thus reminds many of that ideology. Here, at Defend Wisconsin News Round Up, we are less about ideology (though we have a strong affinity for representative democracy) and very much about satisfying our curiosity. "A persistent symbol of resistance and unity, the clenched fist (or raised fist) is part of the broader genre of "hand" symbols that include the peace "V," the forward-thrust-fist, and the clasped hands. The clenched fist usually appears in full frontal display showing all fingers and is occasionally integrated with other images such as a peace symbol or tool.

The other side uses this potent image for labor film festivals environmental activism, and the labor resistance in Wisconsin. The fist has become universal, context is now crucial to understanding its meaning."

It dates back to the salute of Rotfrontkämpferbund, a paramilitary organization of the Communist Party of Germany before World War II.
ReplyDeleteThe raised fist was already an established symbol of protest by 1848, as shown in Daumier's painting The Uprising. This was 16 years before the First Socialist International was even formed.
ReplyDeleteAt a recent protest I was told it was the black fist of socialism by some pretty stupid looking teabagger. That was in reference to the Stand With Wisconsin AFLCIO fist .... no shite sherlock it blue because WI votes mostly Democratic.
ReplyDeleteThe fist is a mistake. But the biggest mistake is having a legal-sized petition form. It's almost as if the organization is a sham intended to stand in the way of regular folks gathering petitions.
